Grade 12 English is a requirement that is valuable NOT overrated to enter University?

I think Grade 12 University level English should be a requirement to enter University because it is a valuable foundation to build on while attending University and to secure your future profession.  The skills developed in Grade 12 English will be relied upon for your admissions essay to university.  You need to be able to write an academic essay sharing who you are and why the program should accept you which Fitzgerald had a similar view. It is important to be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking.  These essential skills are not only applicable to English but all courses throughout your academic career and beyond.  The high school curriculum provides a detailed outline about the strong core competencies that you will continue to build up throughout your university years.  The core competencies include communication and collaboration, thinking in a critical or reflective fashion and personal awareness in relation to responsibility, social awareness and cultural identity.

Through the development of these core competencies a student will learn to write and articulate themselves confidently, logically, and use advancing language that can be used for all university level courses.  These competencies will also be foundational in developing excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are key to being successful at the university level.

Beyond University

Thinking beyond the University years, the skills you develop will be transferrable to the day to day activities in the workplace you may not think about.  You will need to be proficient in the English language such as writing a resume, being a part of the interview process and emailing or speaking to a colleague.  Organizations are looking for professionals with good communication skills.  Strong communication skills assist with conflict resolution, team collaboration, cooperation, presentation skills, and enhances employee engagement.  All this is to enhance productivity, job satisfaction, and retention. I wonder if employees and employers feel that with their Grade 12 Academic English prepared them for their professional career?

  1. I agree. I think that Grade 12 English will be a valuable class that will help individuals get into university, like you said especially with writing the actual entry essay. You will be more likely to be accepted if you have a well-written essay that has proper grammar and punctuation, with a developed vocabulary compared to someone who does not.

  2. Hi Greye, I share the same opinion as you. Not only is learning how to read, speak and write in english valuble and useful every day but it also opens many more job oppourtunities having a high level english education. In the end you said you wondered if employees and employers believed that grade 12 university level english better prepared them for their professional career. I wonder the same, but I would doubt that it wouldn’t have at least boosted their performance in their professional career. I don’t think everybody needs to take a high level english course but I think anyone who has the oppourtunity to learn it should take it!

  4. Hi Greye, great job on presenting your arguments clearly and providing strong evidence to support your ideas. One thing I was confused on was in the first paragraph you were in the middle of a great sentence. Then you randomly put the word Fitzgerald with a link. I would suggest finding a better spot for this link or maybe just add it better into the sentence. this might make that sentence a bit less confusing.

  7. Hi Greye,

I have similar beliefs to yours. Having a strong foundation by taking English over the years are skills that can be used to not only help get you into university. Getting into university is highly compettive and the only way to stand out is through your essay. If a student is not able to convey their ideas in a short and consise way that is grammatically correct, their chances of being accepted decreases.
